Breathing

I was interviewed by Amber Gross for an article about breathing in yoga for Yoga Journal. Thank you, Amber, for your curiosity and for questioning the way breathing is often taught in yoga.
I find it fascinating that many teachers still believe the body must move in a specific direction when you inhale, exhale, or hold your breath. Observing your breath—both inhaling and exhaling—can be a powerful tool to cultivate presence in your practice. However, when we begin to manipulate the breath, I believe we often risk moving in a less helpful direction.
